Is Italy one country, or twenty small ones?

Italy is a young nation, but its regions are ancient, and each have stories as varied as any place on earth. Piemonte, or Piedmont, is at once an agricultural heartland as much as it is an industrial one, centred on the city of Turin. Even their language, Piedmontese, spoken by some two million people, is distinct from Italian, though endangered.

Its wine, some of the most vaunted in the world, champions the great Nebbiolo, but this ancient cultivar comprises barely a fraction of wine production in Piemonte. Barolo and Barbaresco are tiny centres of output. One must encounter its whites – made from Timorasso or Arneis, savoury and complex – and its desert wines, the extraordinary Moscato d’Asti, relegated to the status of meme in Australia, but quite brilliant in its original form.

Join us for an evening of wine and a special menu from our incredible chefs, highlighting the regional brilliance of this Alpine heartland. Sometimes French, often Italian, Piemonte continues to confound our expectations of the past, and reminds us that every nation is the sum of a great multitude of differences.
